Preparing tomorrow’s experts today: An exploration of adaptive expertise and deliberate practice in higher education
This study is part of a program of research aimed at addressing the challenge of optimizing training for future medical experts, the purpose of this project is to inform the principles of curriculum design to train future professionals to effectively handle and learn from the novelty, uncertainty and complexity of the evolving workplace.
As society becomes increasingly complex, professionals must be prepared to rise to the challenge of solving novel and ambiguous problems. Nowhere is the need for this preparation more pressing than in healthcare. The patients of the 21st century will live longer with multiple health conditions. They will require new models of care, delivered through new technologies. To be effective, healthcare professionals will be expected to go beyond the limits of routine care. It is the responsibility of our higher education programs to train expert clinicians who have these capabilities.
The study began September 13, 2022 and is ongoing. Your participation would involve:
Participating remotely using your own computer.
Using the online platform Gorilla you will read cases in either rheumatology or neurology one by one in random order. After reading each case, you will be asked to select the most appropriate diagnosis from a list of responses as part of a fast/slow experiment.
Dedicating 3.5 - 4 hours in total to complete the cases (the total amount of time to answer the cases can be broken down into two separate block of time).
Participants will earn $50 for taking part in the study.
