PREPARING LEARNERS FOR THE FUTURE
The ExCEL Lab focuses on understanding the performance and development of expertise in the health professions. The aim of our work is to inform the design of curricula by providing evidence to support the development and lifelong learning of exceptional clinicians who are able to effectively handle the dynamic challenges of healthcare work.
Excellence should not be an accident of development. Education must be optimised to prepare health professionals to meet the needs of today’s diverse and complex patients.
Our work is grounded in theories of expertise, cognition, learning, and education. We embrace a methodological approach that incorporates both qualitative and quantitative inquiry as needed to deliver on our research objectives. Our students come from a wide variety of backgrounds, reflecting the high value we place on interdisciplinarity.
We are based at the Wilson Centre, University of Toronto and University Health Network.
